Vidharbha farmers not victims of debt-trap alone

Multiple factors seem to be responsible for farmer suicides in Vidharbha region of Maharashtra. True, most of the farmers who committed suicide were facing a debt-trap, but this was the result of cumulative factors, like high input costs, comparatively lower returns on produce, crop failures, inclement weather, lack of irrigation.

Out of 1.5 lakh farmer suicides in the country in 1997-2000, Maharashtra alone accounted for 29,000. If the state government's data for 1995 and 1996 is taken into account, the figure jumps to 32,000.

Incidentally, farmers in Vidharbha predominantly grow cotton. Lately, some are switching over to soyabean cultivation, but no permanent solution to the crisis seems in sight yet. Suicides continue in the region, even after announcement of the PM's Rs 3,750-crore relief package in July 2006.

Banks Using Mobile Phone for Out-of-Band Authentication Bank of America, HSBC turn to out-of-band authentication ...

Amid increasing pressure to protect customers online, some of the largest global banks are turning to out-of-band authentication -- a method of verifying a user's identity using a channel other than the one being used to facilitate the transaction -- to fortify their Web banking services. Bank of America (Charlotte, N.C.; $1.3 trillion in assets) is rolling out a solution that enlists customers' mobile phones to facilitate authentication, while London-based HSBC ($2.15 trillion in assets) is investigating a similar out-of-band authentication solution.

Some experts contend that out-of-band authentication represents true multifactor authentication as mandated by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council, though the FFIEC does not recommend any particular technology. Experts say current, prevalent authentication methods -- such as Bank of America's SiteKey, which uses an image, a brief phrase and challenge questions for mutual authentication -- are not doing enough to combat phishing and identity theft.

Jewish Peace News: Gaza's jeopardized natural resource

2007-11-08 | As Israel chronically under-supplies power to the Gaza Strip (see article by Amira Hass posted earlier on JPN), it is also blocking development of another major energy source. A rich untapped off-shore gas field could, according to Tim Butcher of the Telegraph, ensure Gaza a sustainable, independent economy. Reporting on what he views as Israeli stall tactics in dealing with British Gas, Butcher depicts the multinational as a neutral agent poised to develop the gas fields to the benefit Gazans. His account obscures a world-wide history of similar development projects as, first and foremost, benefiting multinational corporations, not the local population. The people of Gaza may stand to lose their title to this natural resource even if Israel does allow its development. However, as it seems to me, Israel's actual stand on a deal regarding Gaza's gas field remains stubbornly obscure.

Panama City Beach camper killed in accidental shooting

A man was killed and his friend was injured when a 9 mm pistol accidentally discharged during a camping trip, Gulf County authorities said.

Jayson Decker, 31, of Panama City Beach, died at the Gulf County campsite Saturday night. James Cook was treated and released from an area hospital, The News Herald of Panama City reported.

Decker picked up the loaded gun and tossed it to Cook, Sheriff Joe Nugent said. When Cook caught the gun it fired. A single bullet passed through his left hand and struck Decker in the head, Nugent said.

Cook ran to a nearby boat ramp to call for help. The men were camped on the bank of the White City Canal.

Investigators determined evidence from the scene matches Cook's account of the shooting, Nugent said.

Robert Decker, Jayson Decker's father, told The News Herald that the gun did not belong to his son or Cook.
