What's the best way to invest for my two children?
I HAVE been given £5,000 which I would like to invest for my two teenagers. What would see the best return? My eldest is 18, at uni and already has a mini Isa. The younger one is 15. Should I invest it as a lump sum to be split at a later date, or would there be benefits to splitting now and investing in their names? Andrea Cail (via e-mail) .
E-mail helps track missing brother
Before 48-year-old Albert Cothran disappeared, he had been living in Southern California for 30 years. He spent time in cities like West Covina and Baldwin Park as well as Los Angeles, which only made it harder for his family in North and South Carolina to know where to begin looking for him after they lost him. Albert had suffered from a series of strokes and seizures since his 30s, finally restricting him to a wheelchair and putting him in and out of supportive facilities. When he called his brother Jasper in January, he said in slurred speech that he'd had another stroke and was in a hospital. Before Jasper could find out where Albert was, the line went dead. Jasper has spent the rest of the year looking for him. This week, Jasper sent out a desperate e-mail to two dozen Southern California groups: homeless service agencies, police, even the county coroner.

Bank Hapoalim: New fee structure is bad for customers
Bank Hapoalim thinks that the new fee structure is "detrimental to customers and the advance of Israeli bank-account management, and harmful to competition between banks," it said yesterday. The new list contains just 68 types of fees compared with 198 in use at the banks at present. .
Chris Hani Institute faces fraud claims
The Chris Hani Institute, launched with considerable fanfare in April 2003, is in trouble and a fraud investigation may be under way. A joint venture of the South African Communist Party and Cosatu, it was established as an educational and research institute to promote alternative, socialist, ideas. Now, according to the SA Revenue Service (Sars), the institute could face fraud charges for not registering as an employer and for deducting PAYE tax and Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contributions from employees without passing these on. Employees past and present have confirmed that they have not received the required IRP5 tax forms or filled in tax returns while employed by the institute. But tax and UIF deductions were made. Acting director of the institute Oupa Bodibe confirmed this week that such payments had been deducted and not paid over to the relevant authorities.
These 6 fees can be swatted away
Doesn't it feel like every time you make a transaction - rent a car, use a credit card, invest in a mutual fund - some fee you didn't expect and don't understand claims more of your money? It's hard not to feel cheated. What are those fees for, anyway? Are they justified? And most important, is there a way to avoid them? .
PM promises most competitive taxes on 'planet'
Canada's economy remains rock-solid despite the many challenges facing it -- and low taxes will help it stay that way, says Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Harper promised Thursday that to maintain and enhance Canada's prosperity over the long term, his Conservative government would develop "one of the most competitive and attractive tax environments on the planet." Given challenges such as weakness in major export markets and the rapid rise in the Canadian dollar, which soared to US$1.10 on Wednesday before sagging, the government decided to announce new tax cuts in its recent financial statement to spur optimism, he said. Those new cuts reduced taxes by $60 billion. "The total actions taken by this government to date are approaching $200 billion over the next five years," Harper said.
