Kathleen Pender: Tales of overseas real estate ownership

If owning a home is the American dream, owning a home overseas is the ultimate fantasy.

While most of us are content to flip through a real estate brochure when we're visiting some exotic locale, more people are acting on the impulse to buy an apartment in Paris, a villa in Spain or a beachfront condo in Costa Rica.

"In-house we say these people are going on a romantic adventure," says Margaret Hussey, supervising producer with "House Hunters International," a show on HGTV that trails people buying homes outside the United States.

While many still prefer the established cities and towns of Europe, "there's a whole movement of Americans downloading their home equity to buy a $300,000 place in Nicaragua, Panama, the Bahamas," says Hussey.

"They're hoping to get in on the ground floor of an emerging market," adds Peter Field, the show's co-producer.

19-11-2007: Solid future for UMW Holdings

KENANGA Investment Bank Research expects solid future earnings for UMW Holdings, riding on higher Toyota and Perodua volume sales and the booming oil and gas (O&G) sector.

“Moving forward, UMW will continue to gain earnings momentum from its O&G venture. Maintain Buy with a target price of RM18.80 based on PER (price-to-earnings ratio) of 19.5 times to its FY08 EPS (earnings per share) of 96.5 sen," it said.

The research house said new car models in the pipeline and the new Vios launched in mid-Oct — which targets monthly sales of 2,400 units — will underpin Toyota sales volume growth.

Demand for Perodua vehicles remained resilient with Myvi and Viva selling at an average 7,100 and 4,900 units monthly respectively.

Moving forward, Kenanga Research expected the improving market condition and consumer sentiment to drive car sales higher for Toyota and Perodua.

Lifting the lid on Lynn

New documents and reports have shed fresh light on the labyrinthine workings of solicitor Michael Lynns property and legal business, writes Ian Kehoe.

When Frank Kelly returned from his honeymoon last month, he switched on his mobile phone and began working his way through a backlog of text messages.

One of the texts immediately grabbed his attention, but for all the wrong reasons - a friend had texted the Mayo-born builder about Michael Lynn, the solicitor whose law practice had just been shut down by the Law Society. The details were sketchy, but Kelly was instantly concerned. .
