WHAT THEY SAW
Eighty-four-year-old Thomas I. Burrows nestled comfortably into a wooden chair and launched into an eyewitness account of his World War II experiences aboard Landing Ship Tank 701 in the Philippines. He spoke about his proficiency as a Navy radioman, his shock at seeing a stack of dead bodies piled on the ship, some harrowing moments at the invasion of Luzon, overhearing a threatening message from Tokyo Rose and his deep-rooted hatred for the enemy. Nearby, a video camera recorded his every word, putting them on film for posterity. The recording of veterans' oral histories is part of a collaborative Veterans History Project between the National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey and the Library of Congress in Washington. The museum, located at the National Guard Training Center here, sends a copy of each interview, along with documentary material, to the Library of Congress' collections.

Uproar over homeless shelter heats up
Business owners in the vicinity of a proposed homeless shelter on South Milton Avenue south of the railroad tracks support such a facility in Flagstaff. They're less supportive, however, of locating it in their neigbhorhood.About 40 people crowded into a small meeting room Monday night to hear Wendy White of Flagstaff Shelter Services give an overview of the shelter, which could be located in part of the old Home Alternatives building on West Phoenix Avenue. Many in the room were clearly agitated, still upset that neither White nor the city contacted them about the proposal before reading about it in the Arizona Daily Sun.Laura Enciso, owner of Mountain Sky Jazzercise Fitness Center, said she felt the city was colluding with the nonprofit to establish the shelter without notifying the neighbors."The downtown area is the jewel of the city," said Enciso.
Protect yourself from phishing scams
Posted: Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at 10:55 a.m. We've told you to keep an eye on your email for a scam known as phishing -- when it appears a reputable company you're doing business with, asks you to submit personal information to confirm an account. We got one last week, claiming that an online account with a local bank had expired and that the bank needed the person's current information. We did some checking and found two things that didn't add up. First of all, the bank says its employees will never ask people for this type of information and second. The person who received this email doesn't even have an account with the bank. If you ever get these emails, experts say the best defense is to call the company yourself to see if they do business this way.
Markets Likely To Be Range-bound On Back Of Mixed Cues From Global Peers- European Commentary
(RTTNews) - The major European index futures are pointing towards a lower opening for the markets on Monday. But some degree of support may come in from bargain hunting following two days of losses. Global cues are mixed, with the U.S. stocks settling modestly higher on Friday amid volatility and the major markets across the Asia-Pacific region trading sharply lower on Monday on renewed U.S. subprime worries following the resignation of Citigroup CEO Charles Prince. Additionally, crude prices have eased after climbing to record highs on Friday. In Europe, the major economic releases scheduled for the day include the British services PMI and industrial production and the Euro-Zone Sentix investor confidence. Meanwhile, the U.S. investors await data on ISM non-manufacturing index.

Chairman Ben S. Bernanke
At the Cato Institute 25th Annual Monetary Conference, Washington, D.C. November 14, 2007 Federal Reserve Communications The more fully the public understands what the function of the Federal Reserve System is, and on what grounds its policies and actions are based, the simpler and easier will be the problems of credit administration in the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, Annual Report, 1923, p. 95. Montagu Norman, the Governor of the Bank of England from 1921 to 1944, reputedly took as his personal motto, "Never explain, never excuse." Norman's aphorism exemplified how he and many of his contemporaries viewed the making of monetary policy--as an arcane and esoteric art, best practiced out of public view. Many central bankers of Norman's time (and, indeed, well into the postwar period) believed that a certain mystique attached to their activities and that allowing the public a glimpse of the inner workings would only usurp the prerogatives of insiders and reduce, if not grievously damage, the effectiveness of policy.
