| Bank accounts don't impact credit score
Dear Dr. Don, Does it hurt your credit rating if you keep opening and closing high-yield savings accounts? I started using Bankrate to find the highest yields in 2001 and opened an ING account. I've since moved it to E-LOAN and now noticed that I can do 0.5 percent better if I move it somewhere else. -- Rich Rates .
Shocker on the Street
Practically everyone assumed Larry Fink was in like Flynn. News reports had circulated saying Merrill Lynch (MER ) had picked the BlackRock (BLK ) chief to succeed Stanley O'Neal, who was forced out on Oct. 30 in the wake of stupendous subprime losses. The announcement was expected any moment, and then it came on Nov. 14—only the job went to John Thain, head of NYSE Euronext (NYX ). Sources say Fink got the word the way most of us did, over the wires. As for Thain, who was expected to take over Citigroup (C ) in the wake of Charles Prince's fall, the former Goldman Sachs (GS ) technocrat apparently preferred to tackle the cleanup at Merrill rather than at sprawling Citi. (AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-16 01:16 GMT: Bank of Japan still aims to lift interest rates gradually, mid-Oct minutes say
TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - The Bank of Japan's policy board reaffirmed at its Oct 10-11 meeting that it should raise interest rates gradually, in line with economic growth and the outlook for consumer prices, to prevent misallocation of resources, according to the minutes released Friday. The policy board also warned of the risk arising from financial market instability due to the credit crisis and problems in the US housing market. The board agreed that the central bank should "adjust the level of interest rates gradually, in accordance with improvements in the economic and price situation," the minutes show. Members voted 8-1 in favor of governor Toshihiko Fukui's proposal to leave the overnight call rate target at 0.5 percent. Atsushi Mizuno cast the only dissenting vote.
Markets Likely To See Further Down Side On Global Weakness - European Commentary
(RTTNews) - The major European index futures are pointing towards a lower opening for the markets on Friday. Global cues are also weak, with the U.S. stocks closing lower overnight on renewed credit and economic growth worries and the major markets across the Asia-Pacific region trading weak on Friday. Meanwhile, crude prices have fallen after government data revealed higher U.S. stockpiles. In Europe, the major economic releases scheduled for the day include the French non-farm payrolls and wages, the Swiss retail sales, and the Euro-Zone trade balance and current account. Meanwhile, the U.S. investors await data on industrial production and long-term TICS flows. The investors may also look up to Fed's Lockhart's speech on Southeast economy outlook in Montreal. The European markets fell for the first time in four days on Thursday, as disappointing earnings from companies like SABMiller, Sodexho Alliance and Credit Agricole dampened investor sentiments and heavily weighted energy stocks came under pressure following a drop in crude oil prices.

Key theft testimony missing
As more facts came to light during the preliminary hearing for a Hanover woman charged with embezzling almost $68,000 from a church, one thing became clear: Many questions might go unanswered because a key potential witness in the case has taken her testimony to the grave. "Both sides of this case would probably prefer that (former church president Shirley Willet) were around to offer comment," said David Erhard, attorney for Katrina Wischmann Wischmann, 39, of Preakness St., has been charged with 21 felony counts of theft by unlawful taking or disposition. McSherrystown Police began an investigation into missing funds at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 414 Main St., in April after the president of the church's council reported missing funds from October 2005 and December 2006.
